Adobe Brick Making

Available at: Abreu

Adobe Brick Making at Philmont Scout Ranch is a hands-on, outdoor experience that teaches participants about traditional building techniques using natural materials. Located in the heart of Philmont’s beautiful landscape, this activity allows scouts to step back in time and learn how people used to build structures with adobe, a combination of clay, straw, and water, to create bricks for homes and buildings.

During the program, participants get to mix the ingredients for adobe bricks, mold them by hand, and then lay them out to dry in the sun. It’s not only a fun and creative experience, but also an educational one, as you’ll learn about the history of adobe construction and its importance in the Southwest United States. The activity focuses on teamwork, as participants work together to prepare the adobe mixture, shape the bricks, and get them ready for the drying process. You’ll also get a chance to see how this technique was used historically by Native Americans and early settlers in the region.

Throughout the activity, there’s an emphasis on sustainability and using natural resources, which makes it a great way to learn about building with eco-friendly materials. Plus, you get to appreciate the craftsmanship involved in creating durable structures that can last for generations, all while spending time outdoors in the scenic beauty of Philmont Scout Ranch. It’s a perfect mix of hands-on learning, creativity, and environmental education.
