Crate Stacking
Available at: Miners Park
The Crate Stacking at Philmont Scout Ranch is an exhilarating and dynamic team-building activity that challenges participants to balance skill, strategy, and courage. Part of Philmont’s Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience (COPE) program, this activity focuses on developing personal and group skills through a fun and engaging challenge.
What is Crate Stacking?
In crate stacking, participants work together to stack plastic milk crates as high as possible while one member of the team climbs the tower being built. The climber is securely harnessed and belayed by trained COPE staff to ensure safety, allowing them to focus on their balance and precision as the tower grows. Meanwhile, the rest of the team collaborates to pass crates to the climber and maintain the structure’s stability.
Objectives and Skills
Crate stacking is not just about building a tower; it’s about building teamwork and confidence. Participants develop essential skills, including:
- Communication: Clear instructions and feedback between team members are vital.
- Problem-solving: Teams must think critically and adapt as the stack becomes more unstable.
- Trust and Support: The activity fosters trust in both the safety systems and the team.
- Personal Challenge: Climbers push their limits, overcoming fear and testing their agility and focus.
Safety and Supervision
Philmont’s COPE staff ensure all participants are well-prepared and that all safety protocols are followed. The activity is conducted with high-quality climbing gear and belay systems, making it a secure yet thrilling experience.
A Memorable Experience
Crate stacking is a unique way for participants to engage in friendly competition, work together as a team, and achieve a shared goal. Whether reaching new heights as a climber or supporting teammates from the ground, everyone leaves with a sense of accomplishment and plenty of laughs.
This activity is a highlight for many Scouts and advisors, offering a blend of excitement, camaraderie, and personal growth in the heart of Philmont’s inspiring wilderness.
