Conservation Project

The Camper Conservation Program at Philmont Scout Ranch is a pivotal component of the Scouting experience, emphasizing environmental stewardship and hands-on conservation work. To earn the prestigious Arrowhead Award, each participant—whether camper or advisor—is required to complete three hours of conservation service under the supervision of a Philmont Conservation Staff member.

There are 3 conservation project time slots each day:

These projects are strategically integrated into each crew’s itinerary and take place at various backcountry sites across the ranch. The nature of the work varies and may include:

Upon arrival at the designated conservation site, crews are briefed by conservation staff on the project’s objectives, safety protocols, and the specific tasks to be undertaken. Equipped with the necessary tools and knowledge, participants engage in physically demanding yet rewarding work, such as cutting trees, breaking rocks, and building new hiking trails in some of Philmont’s most picturesque locations.

This immersive experience not only contributes to the preservation and enhancement of Philmont’s natural environment but also educates Scouts about land management practices and the ecological significance of their efforts. By actively participating in these projects, Scouts develop a deeper appreciation for the environment and gain practical skills that foster a lifelong commitment to conservation.
