The only place to purchase sectional maps for your trek is at Philmont’s trading post, The Tooth of Time Traders. These maps are invaluable tools for navigating the ranch’s vast backcountry and are designed specifically for Philmont trekkers.
We strongly recommend that your crew bring two sets of maps: one set for the Adult Advisers and one set for the Scout Leadership. Having duplicate maps ensures that if one set is lost or damaged on the trail, you’ll still have a reliable backup. Keeping maps in good condition is critical, as they will guide you through various terrain and help you stay on track throughout your trek.
Philmont is covered by three maps:
- The Overall Map, which provides a blank overview of the ranch.
- The North Country Map, covering Philmont’s northern regions and the Valle Vidal.
- The South Country Map, which details the southern backcountry.
In the spring mail kit sent to your crew, you will receive your first map: the Overall Map. This map serves as a general guide and overview of Philmont’s layout. DO NOT mark this map yet! Your itinerary may change before or during your trek, and you’ll have the opportunity to finalize and mark your route during your trip planning session at Logistics upon arrival at base camp. If you do mark this map, Logistics will require you to purchase a new, unmarked map for trip planning with your crew leader.
The other two maps, which are sectional and more detailed, are double-sided. Each sectional map covers two halves of its respective area, with the east side printed on one side of the map and the west side on the other.
You’ll have ample time to purchase any additional maps you need while at base camp. If you prefer to prepare in advance, you can visit the Tooth of Time Traders online store to purchase maps ahead of time. For use on the trail, the folded sectional maps are especially convenient, as they are compact, durable, and easy to reference during your trek. By planning ahead and ensuring everyone in your crew is equipped with maps, you’ll be ready to explore Philmont with confidence.
All of Philmont’s maps are water resistant, however we still recommend keeping your map dry and protected with a map case.
